Future Scenarios for De Grote Beek
The estate of De Grote Beek has been the home of mental healthcare since 1918. In 2018, De Grote Beek was already on its way to becoming a sustainable healing environment. But because of its long history and vulnerable community, it was necessary to take a careful and deep look at the possible future transformation pathways. How can De Grote Beek be transformed as a sustainable healing environment, while preserving its identity, community and history?
At the heart of the Grote Beek estate's development lie key stakeholders—the municipality, patients, and the ministry of health, among others. To empower decision-making, four spatial scenarios were crafted, tailored to the institution's management. A visionary X and Y axis graph defines the institution's control over transformation (top-down versus bottom-up) and intervention types (organizational versus infrastructural). Within these axes, four distinct quadrants emerged, harboring diverse approaches for a sustainable healing environment. Unveil the potential overarching narratives as spatial strategies, orchestrating the site's transformation with purpose and foresight. The Playbook for Healing environments is a spatial transformation strategy designed based on the Healing Landscape strategy for De Grote Beek. |
