Wind Pavilion

The elegance of concrete is sought in the balance and harmony between the design and its intended natural context.
A play between concrete - in one of its most natural forms, and wind - expressed in its dynamic currents and sounds. This symbiosis results in a symphony of low frequencies, an organic and buzzing song that is similar to that of the aboriginal didgeridoo. A rather traditional shape for concrete is subjected to wind to evolve into a nature driven piece architecture.
The wind pipes, cast within the concrete structure produce a low pitch sound, offer also a structural benefit - lightening the structure. Their varying lengths make for different pitch levels, those in combination with the changing strength and direction of the wind produce a dynamic meditative song.
Here concrete plays with these forces both in its form and its function. This design benefits from the distinct acoustic properties of concrete, allowing the material to stay true to its nature. The neat and sleek environment, created by the bare concrete, in combination with the aeolic sound it produces, offer a distinct meditative atmosphere. This piece of architecture is intended for flourishing natural areas with a certain constancy of breeze such as a seashore or a hillside. This wind temple provides homage to the dynamic wind driven paysage, while also celebrating the plasticity of raw concrete, by taking as a starting point one of its most traditional uses - the bridges.
